Throughout Foundations you have had access to various mark-making tools.  Some traditional, and come bizarre.  This assignment restricts your use of harsh line by using a monoprint / acetate transfer process.  Using a section of mark-making tools of your choice, oil-based ink and acetate, you are to create three drawings using the following format:

1)  The Intimate
– paper size:  11 x 15”
– a tight space, an intimate setting, the private, the personal, the suggestive, a   close up, an intricate investigation, something valued, something not for every   one to see

2)  The Comfortable
– paper size:  22 x 15”
– research the term ‘kitchen sink’ painter, the expected, the overdone, the safe,   the non-offensive, the classic.  Just because it is safe, does not mean it isn’t   exceptionally made.

3)  The Public
 – paper size:  22 x 30”
– for all to see, a statement piece, in your face, can’t be ignored, pay attention to   me, evoke meaning, depth, a message!

Materials required:
– a selection of mark making tools

Materials supplied by us:
– sketching and final drawing paper
– ink, gloves
– clean up mineral spirit
– masking tape, acetate

Make sure you document your process, research the mentioned artists, and update your blog.

Brief 4/6
Binded & Bound

You will each walk away with a powerful reference of roughly 60 artists – all bound together in one book.

Task 1:
Present to our class on ONE contemporary artist (or collective) that primarily uses 2D methods in their artwork.  Your presentation should be 10-15minutes in length, and make use of the projector for image sharing.  A laptop will be available for you to plug a USB in to (MAC compatible only).  Make sure your files will work!  Get approval early on your artist choice so we don’t have overlap!

In addition to this presentation, you must provide a color, printed out version.
Bring this to your presentation.  Your printed handout should include:

– front of page:  relevant bio of your artist, interesting facts, key pieces of work described,    the vital portions of your findings and presentation
– back of page:  4-6 images, links to websites, books, YouTube videos of where you   found your information and images

What’s a book without a cover?
you are asked to create a cover for your book based on the style of the artist you    chose to present on.  Front, back and spine.  Paper will be provided for this.  You may    spend more time on this cover, as final books will not be bound until the end of term.

Task 2:
-Empty a Pen – see handout.

Brief 2/6
Definitely, Most Likely, Absolutely, Not Connected

Artist to reference:  Michael Craig-Martin

Video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ3rHd5lPkE

Collect three physical items that have absolutely nothing to do with one another.
Draw / sketch these items and find their most interesting angle.
Once you find the most interesting angle, turn each one into a contour drawing.

We will use projectors to enlarge your line drawings and ‘draw’ them on to the wall/floor/ceiling (all of the above!?) with colored masking tape.  The contour drawings will overlap.  Each item using a different color.

Explore scale, surface, item quality/value.  Do these items truly have nothing in common?  Why did you chose the tape colors you did?  Which items are in the foreground? background? do they mix? why?  Research Michael Craig-Martin.  Be prepared to speak about his practice and your own take on his approach.  Document your process.  Update your blog.

You will need:
– your 3 items
– colored masking tape
– your regular sketching materials

We will provide:
– projectors
– sketching paper
– some stools / ladders

Make sure you document your process, research the mentioned artists, and update your blog.

Using a variety of mark making materials, papers, and films, you are to create one ‘stacked triptychs’ using magnets and flat head nails to separate layers.  The viewer should be able to look directly on and see three layers that react and play off of one another.

For your source material, use supplied magazine, found book, photocopied materials, printouts from photographs you have taken, and other found imagery to create a collage to reference.  Conor and black and white may be explored.  Do ample testing as to that marks work best on each paper/film type.  Abstract forms are encouraged yet they can also include recognizable objects and forms…

Materials required:

– your full arsenal of drawing / painting tools

Materials supplied by us:
– sketching and final drawing paper
– drawing boards / easels
– masking tape
– vellum
– magnets / flat head nails and hammers

Make sure you document your process, research the mentioned artists, and update your blog.

General Course Outline
Monday, January 23rd – Tuesday, February 21st, 2017

6 Weeks, 6 Assignments

Each week we will critique an assignment and introduce a new one.  We will give work periods when necessary yet as always, it is expected that in addition to class time, you are in the studio working to meet deadlines.

Sketchbook
It is expected that you have a sketchbook glued to your hip at all times.  We will be giving you notes, names, artists to research, and random information constantly.  This can be a sketchbook and note book, or you may have separate books.

It is expected that you do a minimum of one sketch a day… keep your practice up… some days they can be doodles, others something more absolute… the aim is to keep an active practice and mind.

Blog
We want you to keep one!  This can be a continuation from last term.
Use this to upload pictures, findings, self-critiques, and everything else related to this course.  We will link your blog to the general Foundations site.

eBlasts
On most Thursdays, we will e-mail your all to let you know of upcoming supplies you will want to get for assignments.  This should be enough time to collect them, check a few sources, and save time.

We look forward to this semester with you!
